A cool compact, a contemporary beach pad, a Matakana Woolshed, a Devonport Villa, a moody seaside holiday home, a beachfront bach and a pub made up the winning designs of 2015's Auckland/Northland Regional ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.
This week defign takes a look at just a few of these incredible designs.
Kose Family House by Bernie Kose of BK Design is located in Warkworth and won the Residential Compact New Home up to 150m2 Architectural Design Award - sponsored by Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
An energy efficient and relatively maintenance free home, the design ticks a lot of boxes required to make compact living functional and fun. Built with family living in mind, the three bedroom home also needed to be cost effective while fitting into the bush clad suburban site. Judges found the home gave off a sense of generosity regardless of its budget and size.
Takatu Woolshed by Peter Were of Peter Were Architecture/Interiors, located in Matakana, won the Residential New Home over 300m2 Architectural Design Award.
Once a derelict woolshed, it is now a beautiful home with stunning views of Omaha Beach, Little Barrier Island and the Gulf. Embracing the old, the original woolshed dictated the scale and geometry of the new home, while also providing salvaged materials and original woolshed fixtures for cladding and interior features. Judges said the design was a great utilisation of an existing building.
The Bach by David Maurice of LTD Architectural located in Manly Beach won a Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award. This gorgeous renovation of an existing 1950's beachfront bach is fresh and colourful. The design is lively and interesting and goes beyond restoration, while retaining its modesty and ties with the past.
Matakana Village Pub by Peter Were of Peter Were Architecture/Interiors won a Commercial Interior Architectural Design Award - Sponsored by GIB.
A once-bedraggled village eyesore, it is now a landmark destination. The old pub was a mixture of ad-hoc services, odd rooms and taxidermy. The new owners wisely chose to save some of the taxidermy, and replace and refresh everything else. The pub refurbishment features a completely rebuilt commercial kitchen and bathroom facilities, a dining room and a re-energized garden bar.
ADNZ CEO, Astrid Andersen, said that this year's recipients stood out due to their clever thinking when it came to approaching complex design issues that are prevalent in the compact Auckland building environment and the use of extreme creative flair.

Our winning designers have proved with their thoughtful and fresh designs that anything is possible, even in the unique Auckland landscape which demands innovation and excellence."
