A whopping nine awards were given to six Canterbury designers at this year's Canterbury/Westland Regional ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Halswell Residence by Nic Curragh of Objects Limited won a Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 Architectural Design Award.
This incredible home uses basic passive heating and cooling principles and is a fun play on the classic European Farm Barn conversion. By incorporating large hardwood beams, with exposed steel work, raw concrete and plenty of subtle details blended with beautifully crafted bespoke joinery units, the house champions a rich tapestry of old and new. Judge's commented the home was a well-balanced and eclectic selection of natural materials.
Rockhill Residence by Robert Weir of Weirwalker Architecture was a Joint winner of the Residential New Home over 300m2 Architectural Design Award.
The design brief was to create a bold and striking contemporary home that took full advantage of the stunning Northerly views from the lower slopes of Kennedys Bush. The material palette has been kept simple with textured precast concrete facade panels providing a raw, strong and primal base element for the home. Judges commented that the building and the landscape seemed to grow together, to complement one another.
EPL by Cymon Allfrey of Cymon Allfrey Architects Limited won three awards - the Commercial/Industrial Architectural Design Award, the Commercial Interior Architectural Design Award and The Resene Colour in Design Award.
Located at the foot of the Port Hills within a newly established industrial area, this commercial premise was designed for a business which had its previous premises seriously damaged in the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake. Judge's found the factory space was well considered as a working environment, particularly in terms of the quality of light playing out in this large space.
Architectural Designers New Zealand CEO, Astrid Andersen, said that it was fantastic to have so many deserving winners from the Canterbury/Westland region, and that it is particularly exciting to have a few new faces in the winner's circle.
"Canterbury is a fascinating region for designers to have the pleasure of working in. It is exciting, innovative, emerging, transitional and quite complex. To see young designers thriving in this region proves what a fantastic training ground Canterbury is for those looking to make their mark in this competitive industry."
