Ryan Residence by Reece Warnock of Warnock Architecture Ltd took out the title for the Otago/Southland region. A large contemporary family home located on the Taieri Plains, its 360 views of the natural rural landscape have been embraced by Reece Warnock and are a focal point of the design. Due to the fantastic setting, it was decided to locate the living areas to the east to maximize the views to the North, East and South. In addition, the home is wrapped in glass allowing uninterrupted views with only the feature chimney as a focal point for the fire and TV.
Canterbury had two winners - with both Cymon Allfrey and Jason Higham bestowed with the honour.
Located in an inner city suburb of Christchurch city, Cymon Allfrey's Platt House, was a result of the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake which claimed the previous home. Replacing the original 1940's Modernist house, this home takes a 'restorative' architectural approach. It is a modern interpretation of the predecessor with respect to form, location and colour.
While in contrast, located in a more rural part of North Canterbury, Duncan House by Jason Higham, is a light and airy contemporary home featuring impressive stonework walls externally, interspersed with traditional weatherboards. The three distinct wings of the home help separate living spaces and bedrooms, and provide a range of outdoor living spaces protected from the elements in this exposed location.
Astrid Andersen, ADNZ CEO, said that the People's Choice Award is exactly what it says on the tin. It is a commendation from the people who sometimes matter most - peers and friends of the industry.
