Situated on a tight urban site, Tane said right from the beginning it was clear the interior spaces would be key to the three bedroom home feeling spacious and accommodating to a family of four.
The winner of the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award, Judges praised the Hamilton designer's excellent presentation.
"Careful selection and pairing of high quality materials has resulted in a delightful interior. The curation and placement of some exceptional fittings punctuate the space... Consistency in the use and pairing of materials flows through the whole scheme inside and out", judges said.
More than compensating for the home's compact size, the interior arrangement is relaxed and playful, with clever materials and spatial arrangements working together to establish a sense of neatness and order.
At the heart of the home is a minimalist style black plywood kitchen which provides the centrepiece of the design arrangement. Generous concealed storage below counter level allows the upper walls to be free from bulk and creates the perception of a wide open room. Vertical cedar provides a contrast to hard surfaces and a sense of warmth.
Solid delicate fittings and a strong geometric palate combine to set solid backdrops to both the kitchen and bathroom spaces, as well as complement the acute nature of the home's exterior.
The design provides a strong connection with a number of small outside spaces and a small recessed garden to the north facade brings natural light and greenery into the kitchen and master bedroom.
Tane Cox also received the Residential Compact New Home up to 150m2 Architectural Design Award sponsored by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for 'Crows-nest', a seaside surfer's stay at Whale Bay, Raglan. Just ten national awards were announced from nearly 150 entries a this year’s ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards held in a ceremony at Auckland War Memorial Museum in October.
