Canterbury Winners

What do an exotic home in Fiji, a repurposed grain silo in Little River and the ReadyMix office building in Kaiapoi have in common? Each was a winner in the Canterbury/Westland regional awards ceremony for the 2014 ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Marina Point by Greg Young of Life Style Architecture was the winner of the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award. This holiday home has been designed for the use of two New Zealand families, and embraces what is traditional in Fiji rather than in NZ. There are four bures with separate functions which are accessed individually through boardwalks, reminiscent of local resorts. The construction materials were locally sourced wherever possible, utilising native Fijian timbers, woven mats, and concrete. The buildings are also naturally ventilated using louvres and breeze ways, with rainwater retention. The judges commented that the home provides luxurious living in a tropical environment.

While on a less exotic note, the ReadyMix Office Building in Kaiapoi designed by Jason Walker of WeirWalker Architecture was a joint winner of the Commercial/Industrial Architectural Design Award.

The building is a modern two-storey office incorporating bold angled concrete panels with feature eyebrows to reflect the raw concrete product that Readymix produce at their on-site yard. The large glazed windows and use of horizontal louvres bring this sharp concrete design together. The judges said it was a bold sculptural composition for a precast concrete company and it cleverly showcases the potential of the product.

ADNZ General Manager, Astrid Andersen, said all entries from the Canterbury region should be proud of their achievements.

"Though it is an exciting time to be in the architecture industry in Christchurch it is also very challenging. It is a whole new landscape with a unique approach required. It is not just about the large impressive commercial builds in the city centre, homes that represent good design practices and modest budgets are also required. It was wonderful to see the talent coming out of the region."
