CMS Today Design Experience Series kicks off around the country on 30 June. Acclaimed ADNZ award winning designer, Brendon Gordon, is one of this year's key note speakers. With a career spanning 18 years and having designed some stunning homes, Brendon will be sure to spark the creative juices when he shares his insight into the design and background of some of New Zealand's most recognised homes.
Beginning his career in 1996 after graduating from the University of Auckland, Brendon immediately launched his practice Brendon Gordon Architecture. A credit to its success, the practice is still going strong today - with five staff and a new office in Tauranga.
Brendon Gordon Architecture mostly works in NZ but has completed some projects in Australia. A large proportion of designs by the practice are coastal properties in Coromandel and Mount Maunganui. As key note speaker, Brendon will be highlighting some of his favourite projects while also giving a behind the scenes look at the complexities and challenges in creating some of his builds.
One project that Brendon is particularly proud of and will receive special mention in his presentation is a recently completed home in the Hill Country Estate.
"Hill Country Estate is an amazing site; it looks right out over Napier to the coast and gives a glimpse of Mount Ruapehu on a good day. Set in this dramatic landscape is this small enclave with a tennis court, golf course and vineyards," says Brendon.
"What I found inspiring was the high standard of architecture in the existing homes surrounding the enclave. The site demanded a special response architecturally, we worked hard to exceed the client's expectations and to deliver something that could hold its own on this remarkable site - while also fitting in with the surrounding properties. The result is a pretty special home," says Brendon.
Speaking alongside Brendon Gordon is Emma Young of PHOOEY Architect | Australia. PHOOEY is internationally recognised for their employment of innovative re-use & adaptation strategies that enable new life to be breathed into old things.
Brendon says though Emma Young's presentation will have a strong focus on sustainability there will be some cross over in their approach to design.
"Approximately 90% of the houses we design have solar hot water and heating. All the projects I will be presenting will include this design element. Many of our clients are becoming more and more eco-conscious, which is great. Good design incorporates sustainable principles and practices and our clients are becoming more educated on the benefits," says Brendon.
